Google 已經多次展示過 Google 眼鏡的功能，但 Explorer 開發版本 Google 眼鏡與將來實際販售的 Google 眼鏡並不相同，Google 也還沒真正描繪出 Google 眼鏡的實際應用。不過已知的是，Google 眼鏡將會透過小型觸控板進行手勢操作、以及語音辨識的聲控功能。
Google 近年來最酷的產品：Project Glass product (以下簡稱 Google 眼鏡)，在 Google I/O 2012 大會實際登場，甚至更早先 Google 員工就已經帶著 Google 眼鏡趴趴走實拍許多照片。Google 表示 Google 眼鏡上頭有感應按鈕、氣壓計、電子羅盤等偵測儀，攝影機有錄影與拍照的功能，且可以搭在一般的眼鏡上頭而不會衝突，同時比一般的太陽眼鏡還輕。不過 Google 眼鏡目前還不會對一般消費者進行販售，僅有硬體開發商與現場與會者可以購買 Explorer 版本 Google 眼鏡，單價為 1500 美金。

雖然 Google 已經在 Google I/O 2012 大會上炫耀過這隻眼鏡的玩法，不過對於一般使用者該如何在日常使用中徹底發揮 Google 眼鏡時，則還沒有定論。Project Glass 負責人 Babak Parviz 日前接受 IEEE Spectrum 網站採訪時，未具體描述 Google 眼鏡的功能，僅表示 Google 眼鏡的外型和功能尚未定案、依然在不斷變化。
Babak Parviz 表示 Google 眼鏡通常被當作「一款圖像化、讓使用者可通過圖片和影像進行溝通的設備」，不過他認為 Google 眼鏡應該還有更多可能，目前確定 Google 眼鏡將會搭載一組小型觸控板，使用者得以透過手勢操作進行相關指令；此外 Google 也在語音命令上做了許多測試，讓使用者動動口就能與產品無縫結合進行操作。

目前已知的拍照、錄影等視訊功能，確定是 Google 眼鏡的基本功能；未來也將能與手機配對進行通話功能，擴增實境也將是未來會具體應用的範圍之一。在電池使用壽命方面，目前團隊正致力讓 Google 眼鏡維持一整天的電力，以達成使用者從早到晚的輔助需求。
紐約街頭直擊紅色 Google 眼鏡
雖然 Google 還沒幫使用者想好 Google 眼鏡該怎麼用，但 Explorer 開發版本的 Google 眼鏡依然持續進行中。最近美國紐約就有人目擊有使用者配戴紅色的 Google 眼鏡，顯得相當亮眼，同時這隻 Google 眼鏡有加上透明鏡片，讓大家對未來市售版 Google 眼鏡更多了一份想像。
